This is a combination of a building simulation (like "Sim City") and a real-time strategy. Build and conquer castles, populate lands with your peasants and defend your country from invaders. The game has two principal modes, simulation and invasion. In simulation, you just build castles and villages, without troubling yourself with wars. In invasion mode, you have to use tactical combat to defeat your enemies. Your opponents are Duc de Puce, Duc de Beauregard, Duc Truffe and Duc Volpe, also called "the rat", "the snake", "the pig" and "the wolf", respectively. They all have different personalities and styles of combat - of all of them the wolf is the most difficult to defeat.

The game lets you step into the shoes of either the legendary Richard the Lionheart or the formidable Saladin. A mix of real-time strategy and city-building games, the game's desert setting requires strategies customised to the environment and its lack of water. There are 50 skirmish missions to be fought in sequence, as well as map and scenario editors. The 25 units include assassins, archers and fire throwers, and (in something of an anachronism) allow for suicidal charges. As with the original Stronghold, Crusader includes a scenario editor and enables up to 8 computer in multiplayer via LAN or over the Internet.

Stronghold Crusader Extreme is an enhanced re-release of Firefly Studios' Stronghold Crusader. Besides the latest version of the original game, it also includes a so-called Crusader Extreme-mode for skilled players in which the limitation on how much units the player can have at the same time has been removed. This allows the player to built armies with 10.000 and more units. To accompany the Extreme-mode, a new single player campaign with 20 missions and five new AI-opponents awaits the player. The sequel to Firefly Studios' acclaimed castle building and management sim offers 3D graphics and many new gameplay elements. It retains the mix of a construction/ management game with real-time strategic combat in which the player either lays siege to his opponents or defends his castle against them. The campaign is again divided in two parts: the more peaceful part in which management is the primary concern of the player, and the military campaign in which the player fights to restore order to the troubled kingdom of England. However, there is some limited fighting in the peaceful campaign (mostly beasts and bandits) and the player must definitely know how to build a good economy to support his army in the military campaign. The game also offers additional modes of play, such as Kingmaker, Free Form play, multiplayer skirmish and others. There are also many ready-made historical castles which the player can either besiege or defend.
